CELE proposals for IGF 2015

...............................................................................................................................................................................

04/13/2015

CELE, as it has in past editions, presented workshop proposals for the Internet Global Forum 2015, which will take place in João Pessoa, Brazil, from November 10-13.

On this occasion, CELE proposed two workshops. The first, "Human rights and the Internet: The role of intergovernmental organizations," is to be in coordination with UNESCO. The idea is to bring together representatives of international bodies - such as the rapporteurs for freedom of expression of the Organization of American States, United Nations and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, among others - to discuss their role in the Internet governance ecosystem and emerging issues in the field of human rights in digital environments for the coming years. Representatives of civil society organizations will also participate in the session, along with government agencies and academics, in order to explore how stakeholders can work together to promote a digital environment that respects and promotes human rights.
CELE’s second proposal, "Having your cake and eating it too: Can Internet rights and access goals be reconciled?”, is to be jointly organized with the Centre for Studies of Technology and Society at the University of San Andrés. This session seeks to address how Internet governance often seems to navigate tension between two objectives: on the one hand, the protection of desirable principles such as privacy of the user and the open architecture of the network; on the other hand, the provision of access to Internet infrastructure and services to as many users as possible.

In past years, CELE has participated in IGF workshops that dealt with issues such as human rights and the Internet, corporate social responsibility and ICTs, challenges for Internet regulation in Africa and Latin America (2011); criminal law and the open Internet (2012); and, more recently, a meeting in which participants discussed the Charter of Human Rights and Principles for the Internet (2014). Along with UNESCO and other institutions, CELE organized IGF editions sessions in 2013 and 2014 on digital safety for journalists and bloggers.

Access to all the workshop proposals for the IGF may be found here.
